Welcome back to Reed – Spring 2009

January 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Welcome back to Reed. And thank you for signing up for Chem 324 – Adv. Mechanistic Organic Chemistry.

You are probably wondering what this course will be about and that’s why you came here looking for some information. Well, your curiosity is well warranted. The course always changes a little (sometimes a lot!) from year to year. This year I plan to follow the trails that were laid down last year so don’t hesitate to talk to some seniors who have taken the class. You can also take a look at what I have planned by looking at the About page and the Syllabus (stored under Miscellaneous with other good stuff).

Point of interest: because this is a blog and not a standard web page, you can interact with the class web site.

This means you can comment on post, submit questions, and sign up to have every post emailed to you. You can also search my posts by typing in a word or phrase, and you can display posts selectively by choosing a category from the list on the right. (This post is kept under the “Resources” category.)

Photochemistry Links

Here are some links for Friday’s lecture. My computer was goofy and slow so you might want to look these materials over more carefully on your own.

Jablonski diagrams

  • Lecture animation
  • Another diagram. This one correctly represents internal conversion and intersystem crossing as processes that (more or less) conserve energy.
  • Wikipedia also has a short and useful description of internal conversion that contains some material on biochemical systems that I was unaware of

(Hanovia) Photochemical reactor

  • Lecture image
  • Another version that allows magnetic stirring (power supply and stand also shown; Sigma-Aldrich). Click on image for larger image.
